PREPARATION FOR NETS

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE NETS WALTHAM GAINS

Bishop's Waltham Cricket Club have turned to outside help to enhance facilities at their already impressive Albany Road ground.

Fundraising activities and successful grant applications mean that the Club will shortly sign a contract with S & C Slatter of Newbury to start

work in April on a two-bay net and an artificial match wicket. Project sponsors include National Lottery Awards for All, Lord's Taverners, Hampshire Playing Fields Association, Autocruise and British Telecom.

Chairman Steve Enfield enthused: "Our three youth sides, drawn from local schools and parishes, will now have the chance to learn the basics of the game on a consistent surface unaffected by the weather. We are now in the second phase of development following our move to Albany in 2001, and with the first team's promotion to County Division 3 of the Hampshire League and our ever-improving facilities, Bishop's Waltham is an exciting place to play cricket right now."

Ground committee chair and head groundsman Martin Livermore added: "The option of using the artificial match wicket for colts and evening games allows us to concentrate on preparing pitches for the longer weekend matches."

The Club, which returns to the Rosebowl for pre-season coaching from the beginning of February, is eager to build on last year's successful recruitment drive. Potential new members can get in touch via the Club's website at www.bishopswaltham-cc.co.uk or second team captain Simon Jones (023 9235 2374).
