WALTHAM CLAIM SHOCK WIN IN HAMPSHIRE CHRONICLE CUP
12 MAY 2004
Bishops Waltham's Evening XI pulled off a surprise victory at the expense of Easton & Martyr Worthy in the Hampshire Chronicle Cup on Wednesday.

Batting first, Easton's openers struggled to score sufficiently quickly against the tight line bowled

by openers Pete Boston and skipper John Dunlea, before both perished with just 22 runs on the board after 7 overs. There followed a middle-order recovery led by Dave Birch (27) and Shaun Green (22) as Easton reached a total of 109 for 7 on a batting-friendly artificial wicket. Kev Bowen, the pick of the Waltham bowlers, picked up 4 for 29 and Dunlea claimed 3 catches as the innings drew to a close.

In response, Waltham openers Simon Jones and Richie Hughes compiled a very impressive opening stand of 92 in 13 overs. Jones carried his bat through the innings for 42 not out, whilst Adam Wymbs' 10 not out help guide Waltham home with an over to spare. Hughes, celebrating his first half-century for the club, smashed 3 huge sixes and 3 fours en route to his 52. With Shaun Green in particular suffering at the hands of Hughes, Butcher and D Green were the pick of the Easton bowlers but couldn't find the breakthroughs they needed as Waltham coasted home.

Waltham play IBM Hursley on Tuesday 25 May in the next round.
