HARVEY THE CENTURION
5 JUNE 2005

Waltham's Ron Harvey registered his maiden century (121) in the South East Divison during the 1977 season. During that season he made 495 runs averaging 49.5 to carry off the divisional batting award.

In Waltham's opening County 3 game this season (May 7th 2005) some 29 seasons later, Harvey made exactly 100 at home to Ropley, and his unbeaten 73 at Bedhampton took the Waltham left hander to 303 runs at an average of 101 so far this year. (see

).

There have been many centuries in between - at least six more in the league for Waltham and also for Hursley Park for whom he played up to Southern League level between 1985 and 1997 - but Ron's age remains a closely guarded secret.

Harvey held the Bishop's Waltham club record for the most league runs in a season for 25 years, with his own personal best of 682 runs (in 1982) within reach given the evergreen opener's sensational start to 2005. Son-in-law Rob Bailey wrested that record from him scoring 740 runs in 2002, but Harvey has the distinction of being the only Waltham player to scoop divisional batting AND bowling awards (41 wickets at an average of 6.9 in 1978, the year Foster claimed the County 1 batting prize.

The 1978 Hampshire League handbook features debonair and dapper snapshots of both Harvey and Foster (who numbers Bishop's Waltham amongst his previous clubs), while this link features a more recent profile of the Waltham left-hander: http://www.bishopswaltham-cc.co.uk/profiles/harvey.html
