Bishops Waltham hosted Rob Helson's Presidents XI on a scorching Sunday. The match was played in an excellent spirit with a touch of competitiveness about it, the spirit attributable to the copious amounts of wine consumed during a fine lunch, which was provided by Mrs. Sarah Enfield and Mrs. Lorna Bailey.

President's captain Phil Baldock won the toss and his openers Simon Jones and Gary Brent found runs difficult to come by; the ever-green Steve Enfield being the main protagonist with a spell of six overs, five maidens, one run, one wicket, notably the prize scalp of Zimbabwean international Brent.

Enfield picked up the Waltham Champagne moment award for ensuring he didn't bowl a second spell, thus ruining his figures! Simon Jones compiled a patient 25 before he was dismissed by Jon Dunlea (9-3-22-3) and Baldock played a captain's innings with an entertaining knock of 50 before he was skittled by van Duiker (9-4-9-2).

The President's innings closed at 174-9 from 50 overs. Club skipper Rob Bailey stroked his way to 49 before he pushed at left-arm spinner Plum Bundy and was caught at mid-on. Dave Oddie won the Man of the Match award for his responsible innings of 67 not out; however, he was unable to guide the home side to victory as the President's men bowled a tight line and length.

Burridge pair Pants Belson and Gary Brent were the pick of the bowlers with Belson taking 4-20 and the award for President's Champagne moment. With Waltham finishing 8 runs short, winning skipper Baldock was awarded the Dave Williams President's Trophy.

President Rob Helson praised umpire Mike Crouch for his stamina standing out in the middle for 100 overs in the wilting heat as guests, players and officials retired to the club house for a long cooling drink.
